The miracle of WestJet is that it may have started out to be one of the most ambitious PR schemes in history. But it didn’t stay that way. You can see the Christmas miracle in the eyes of everyone connected with it. There is a Spirit that shines through the planners and the employees that transcends the merely commercial.
For several years I have felt myself becoming jaded about the whole Christmas greed and materialism scene, The old Christmas spirit just wasn’t there anymore. I could see it missing in others, too. Especially when our economy bubble burst. Especially seeing Wall Street grifters causing the impoverishment of millions, then being rewarded for it.
I clung to the story of Jesus’ birth in the second chapter of Luke and went through the motions of Christmas tree and gift giving. But this story and video of WestJet’s Miracle reminded me that the giving of gifts is an integral part of the Christmas story. We celebrate God’s greatest gift to the world by extending that awesome expression of love to others. Seeing these people so alive with the joy of of being a part of this wonderful event, and seeing the utter surprise, delight, and wonder on the faces of the passengers — adult and child alike — is electrifying, like a defibrillator for the soul. It’s like God saw the world’s need for something positive and joyful, and picked a commercial company with the means to bring it about. This is a reminder of the original Christmas spirit that jump-started some bored shepherds long ago. Shepherds who were given the message that the birth of Jesus would bring about God’s plan for peace. His goodwill gift to mankind. (Luke 2:14). And it fills the world with hope.
A big thank you to my blog friend, Dave Navarre (WE’RE NOT LOST, SERGEANT, WE’RE IN … FRANCE), who posted the following video on Facebook. I may be the last person in the world to see it.

Second Miracle: WestJet Employee Saves Man’s Life
As if one miracle within a five-day span were not enough, a WestJet flight attendant (who just “happened” to be walking by at the time), played a major role in saving a man’s life yesterday after landing at the Edmonton International Airport in Alberta, Canada. To say that God works in mysterious ways is an understatement.
