HERCULES, Releases Friday, June 25 — Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars in the upcoming, epic “Hercules”. This looks to be a summer blockbuster because for once they hired an actor who really does look like a Hercules. There also seems to be a viable story behind it rather than just smash, crush, grunt. It is based on “Hercules: The Thracian Wars” by Steve Moore of Radical Comics. Also, it is not filmed in that depressing monochromatic mode like that of “The 300”. I like Dwayne Johnson in action movies. He delivers. Hercules, directed by Bret Ratner, will hit the theaters Friday.
EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS — Christian Bale stars in this epic re-telling of the Biblical story of Moses, this time going back to his days growing up in the household of Pharaoh alongside Pharaoh’s son, which is assumed to be Rameses II. The Bible is silent about those years, but, since Moses was 40 years old when he killed the Egyptian taskmaster, there is a lot of life before Exodus 2. As a prince of Egypt, Moses would have been a leader of armies and, therefore, a veteran fighting man. I can also see rivalry between Moses and his royal adoptive brother. However else the movie interprets the story, I have no idea. But the fighting part sounds solid. Release date is December 12, 2014, directed by Ridley Scott, and starring Christian Bale, Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley, Joel Edgerton, Aaron Paul, and John Turturro.
DRACULA UNTOLD – Release date October 17 – starring Luke Evans and directed by Gary Shore, this epic fantasy/adventure goes back to the origin of Dracula, to the how and why he became who and what he was. From the trailer it looks like Transylvania, where Count Dracula (the man) rules, is being overrun by invaders — the Turks of the Ottoman Empire. The Turkish army was known to take children of the vanquished — between 7 and 14 years old — as soldiers. This goes along with the true history of the real Count Dracula, known as Vlad the Impaler. As for the movie, Luke Evans looks and sounds awesome as Count Dracula, who will do anything to protect his family, even selling out to evil for the power it brings. [Note: Prince Charles claims a bloodline to the Draculas. In order to bring tourism to Transylvania, the prince has appeared on a video and given interviews. In one interview he is quoted as quipping, “Transylvania is in my blood. The genealogy shows I am descended from Vlad the Impaler, so I do have a bit of a stake in the country.” Well . . . on the posters for Dracula Untold there is a legend: “Every bloodline has a beginning.”
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY – Releasing August 1 – starring Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel. and Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Glenn Close, and a host of others. Directed by James Gunn, Guardians is comprised of an unlikely, funny, and power-slinging batch of superheroes from the minds of Marvel Comics, and they are coming to a screen near you. Chris Pratt as Peter Quill teams up with a group of extraterrestrial misfits to save the cosmos. And it looks like another blockbuster for Marvel Studios.
