What Does it Mean to be a Christian? It’s Free to All, Yet Exclusive.

The confusion about what constitutes a Christian is like a Picasso painting with both eyes on the same side, or a Salvador Dali and his melted clocks. You can understand the why, it’s just twisted.

On Facebook I see people posting Christian stuff alongside the aligning of the stars and four-letter language and hate slogans. And if you weren’t confused before Facebook, you will be..

And why is there such confusion? Because people who say they are Christians have no idea what it means.

Here it is.

Christianity is salvation through the total acceptance of Christ, and his blood and sacrifice alone. Not of our deeds, and good works, but of his.

Now here’s the dilemma: Christianity is free — but exclusive. You cannot serve God and — Mammon, Buddha, New Age, etc.

Yet people want to hedge their bets. They want to dabble in “religions”, or the mystic, or magic or even a piece of Satan and a piece of God, a heigh-ho time here on earth, and a get out of hell free card when they hit that corner at a 100 miles an hour.

I explained all this to someone once and they got mad because I was so narrow minded as to think Jesus was the only way. Didn’t I know that all these “gods” people talk about are just “God” by another name? Was I that ignorant?

Not ignorance. I just know who I am in Christ. I know who I believe in, and I am persuaded that he is able to keep me [safely in his hand and heart] until the day of his return.  2nd Timothy 1:12

The Bible says Jesus is the way. There is no other way. You can’t play games with God. He knows all, sees all, and created all. If you don’t believe it, or don’t want to believe it, that’s your business. But it doesn’t change the fact. You-will-not-go-to-Heaven-any-other-way-but -through-Jesus Christ You can’t be your own God and get there by your own goodness. Compared to God, our “righteousness” looks like filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). Oh, there are “good” people. But even the good people sin. You can kid yourself about that all you want but you can’t change the fact that it’s sin that separates us from God. We have no way to pay that sin debt ourselves. Jesus paid it all.

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

The world’s view is mostly like that of  “Blood, Sweat, and Tears” when they sing:

I can swear there ain’t no Heaven But I pray there ain’t no Hell

Look and listen. This could be you.

Now here’s what the Bible says.

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” John 3:3

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6

For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. [For all people have sinned and do not measure up to the glorious standard of God]. Only Jesus measured up to that standard, and only Jesus has the power and the authority to save us.

It is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God– [ You can’t take credit for it]. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. Ephesians 2: 8-9

In Him [Jesus] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace Ephesians 1:7

You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you Deuteronomy 6:14

Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. Isaiah 44:6.

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ forgave you. Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 4:30 – 5:2.

  1. Every thing that you said is true, but how can a person know he has been truly saved? Do you have to “feel” it with your emotions?

    • Jane, I have been thinking about your question all weekend, and feel it is too important to answer just off the cuff. So I am going to go to the Bible for some prayerful thought because it is a question asked by many. And yes you can know that you are a born again believer. I just want to write it down so everyone can understand. Thank you for your question. It will be my priority.
