Surprised by Joy. New Artists Shine Up Old Christmas Songs

Home Free singing “Angels We Have Heard On High”

I have discovered some new artists with a new old way of singing, beginning with two a cappella groups that will make your heart sing. They are pure joy to listen to and they leave a glow upon the soul. What a Christmas gift from all these artists! The last one is the surprise, for the unsuspecting crowd at the Smithsonian.

The first group, Home Free, appeared in 2013 on the TV show “The Sign-Off”, an a cappella music competition, and won. They are awesome. Here is “Silent Night” with only violinist Taylor Davis as accompaniment. Be sure to listen through her violin solo to the end. The whole performance is wonderful.

Winners of season three of The Sign-Off were the members of the a cappella group “Pentatonix”. Here they are singing, “Mary Did You Know”.

The last one is performed at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. The U.S. Air Force band mingled with the crowd in disguise as a lone cellist sits down in a chair and begins playing. People don’t know what’s going on. They eye him askance, some stopping to listen and to see what’s going on. These visitors to the museum were surprised by joy, and it is a pure joy to watch the unveiling in action. Here’s the video and the Air Force Band playing “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”, kicking off the Christmas season. Enjoy the looks on these faces.
